In 1968, Ennio Varsi opened up the first gourmet
Italian salumeria in Whitestone, Queens. His goal
was to make the best Italian latticini and salumeria
products available to the burgeoning community.
Ennio's passion was evident in all that he did; from
the hand made fresh mozzarella to the perfectly aged
parmigiano and Ennio's line of home made fresh
pastas and sauces, E.Varsi was the vessel by which
Ennio lived out his passion.
In 1986 at the impressionable
age of 15, Mario Garufi began working for Ennio.
Slowly but surely Mario learned the Italian gourmet
business from Ennio and over the course of nine
years it became clear that Mario shared Ennio's
passion for fine Italian products and he also not
only worked for Ennio, but now worked with him.
When, in 1995, Ennio decided to retire it was his
hope that Mario would be willing to take over what
Ennio had started and thus E. Varsi was sold to
Mario and his two brothers, Carlo and Pino.
Today, Mario and Pino
continue to carry on the traditions that have made
Varsi Deli a Queens institution for so many years.
They are all committed to carrying on the vision set
forth by Ennio by continuing to meet their
customers' expectations for high quality products
and exceptional service.
